As a result of recent changes to policies on the use of animals for assessment purposes by both the AVBC and the University of Queensland, it has become necessary for the AVBC to change the anaesthesia and surgery sections of the clinical examination.
The anaesthesia and surgery examinations will now use a model-based and OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) assessment format to assess the candidate’s clinical skills.
In addition, all candidates will be required to submit a clinical case log to the AVBC office. This case log must include three (3) anaesthetic cases and three (3) surgical cases that the candidate has completed under the supervision of an approved veterinarian. These case logs must be submitted prior to enrolment in the AVE Final (Clinical) Examination.
The OSCE assessment format and case log requirement will first apply to all enrolments in the 2026 November and December clinical examination sessions.
