Expression of Interest: Australasian Veterinary Examination (AVE) – Committee and Examination Leadership Roles

The Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) invites Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from suitably qualified and experienced veterinarians interested in contributing to the governance, quality assurance, technical leadership and delivery of the Australasian Veterinary Examination (AVE).

The AVE provides a pathway for overseas-qualified veterinarians to demonstrate the competencies required to seek veterinary registration in Australia and New Zealand. AVBC seeks applicants committed to fair, valid, reliable and defensible assessment aligned with contemporary veterinary practice and AVBC Day One Competencies.

Applications are welcomed from existing AVE Committee (AVEC) members and external applicants. Applicants should review the attached role descriptions and approved AVEC Terms of Reference before applying.

Roles open for Expressions of Interest

1. AVE Committee Member

Contributes independent professional and technical oversight of examination development, assessment standards, quality assurance, examination integrity and continuous improvement. Relevant expertise may include clinical practice (companion and large animal), veterinary education, assessment design, psychometrics, simulation and standards development. Applications from recent AVE graduates are also encouraged, consistent with the Committee composition requirements.

Role Description

2. AVE Chief Examiner

Provides expert technical and clinical leadership for examination content, assessment design, calibration, clinical validity and alignment with Day One Competencies. The role includes leading technical content development and specialist working groups and advising AVEC on examination quality. The Chief Examiner is an AVEC member; the specific appointment mechanism will be confirmed through the appointment process.

Role Description

3. Chief Examination Coordinator (Onsite – GATTON)

Coordinates safe, consistent and effective onsite delivery of scheduled AVE clinical examinations, including readiness, briefings, personnel coordination, candidate flow, operational communication and incident escalation. Experience in practical clinical examinations, including OSCEs, is desirable. This is an examination-specific operational role, not an AVEC membership position, and requires onsite attendance for the full examination period plus preparation and debriefing.

Role Description

Eligibility and selection considerations

Applicants will be assessed against the relevant role description and the collective skills, experience and representation needs of AVBC and AVEC. For Committee appointments, members must be from an AVBC member jurisdiction. Clinical appointees must hold current unconditional veterinary registration, have averaged at least 15 hours of clinical practice per week during the preceding 12 months, maintain required continuing professional development and complete annual attestations.

The Committee seeks a balance of clinical practice, veterinary education and technical assessment expertise, including Australian and New Zealand perspectives, with consideration of professional background, geography and gender diversity. Applicants should demonstrate independent judgement, collaborative working practices and a commitment to confidentiality and examination integrity.

AVEC Committee members are not permitted to attend the AVE as examiners. Applicants should consider this separation of roles when applying.

What to submit

Please submit a current curriculum vitae (CV) and/or CV synopsis a written Expression of Interest addressing:

  • The specific role for which you are applying
  • Why you are interested in the position and how you would contribute to the AVE.
  • How your qualifications, professional experience, capabilities and achievements meet the relevant role description.
  • Relevant clinical, educational, assessment, examination, governance or leadership expertise.
  • Your understanding of independent, fair and defensible high-stakes assessment.
  • Your availability and capacity to meet the role’s meetings, preparation, working-group or onsite requirements.
  • For clinical applicants: your registration jurisdiction and status, and confirmation that you meet the clinical practice and CPD requirements.

The CV should outline qualifications, current and previous appointments, relevant professional experience, governance or committee service, and other achievements supporting your application.

Appointment and conditions

EOIs will be considered against the relevant requirements. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to discuss their application or provide verification of qualifications, registration and experience. Appointments will be made in accordance with the approved Terms of Reference and AVBC processes.

For AVEC membership, the standard term is three years, with a maximum of two consecutive terms, subject to exceptional extensions permitted by the Terms of Reference. Chief Examination Coordinator appointments are examination-specific, with engagement conditions confirmed separately.

Successful applicants will be required to comply with AVBC’s conflict of interest requirements, including disclosure and appropriate management of any actual, potential or perceived conflicts, as well as applicable confidentiality, examination security and other AVBC policies. A conflict of interest declaration is not required as part of the initial EOI submission.

Existing AVEC members are encouraged to apply for roles aligned with their expertise and interests and will be considered through the same process as external applicants. Appointment and engagement details, including remuneration where applicable, will be confirmed with successful candidates.
