Updated English Language Standards

We are still seeking feedback on the application of English language skills requirements at registration. AVBC has been the gatekeeper for English language for overseas graduates taking examinations or skills assessment for migration. Consequently, boards have not had to deal with a large number of communications issues due to language.

Under section 4.1 of the recent draft guidelines for skills assessment from the Department of Education, Skills & Employment, it is stated that standards for skills assessment should not extend beyond what is required for registration or licensing with respect to a particular occupation. If AVBC is forced to lower or drop our requirement for English at skills assessment, there may be rough patches ahead for boards in this realm.

Taking into account feedback and recommendations from the English Language Working Group, a NEW VERSION of the AVBC English Language Standards has been drafted. We recommend that Boards consider how they might best manage the application of the attached 2020 English Language Standards within their jurisdictions.

Please send feedback to Dr Julie Strous (ed@avbc.asn.au).
